JSW Energy makes electricity, announced today that they’ve begun construction on a massive battery storage project in Rajasthan.

The project is huge! It’s designed to store 1 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity. That’s enough to power a whole city for a few hours. To make this giant battery, JSW Energy will actually build two smaller batteries, each one 500 MWh, and then connect them together. Each of these smaller batteries will be able to store enough electricity to power a city for about two hours.

This is significant for several reasons. First, it will help India manage its electricity supply better. Sometimes, India produces more electricity than it needs, and other times, there’s not enough. This battery will help store extra electricity when there’s a lot, and then release it back into the grid when there’s not enough. This will help keep the lights on and everything running smoothly.

Second, this project shows that JSW Energy is moving into a new area of business: storing energy. This is a growing field, and JSW Energy wants to be a leader in it. Besides building batteries, they’re also working on ways to make clean hydrogen, which is another way to store energy.

The battery project is being built in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, which is a state in western India. Construction is expected to be finished by June of next year (2025). The project is being built under a special agreement where JSW Energy will construct, own, and run the battery for 12 years, and then ownership will be transferred to someone else.

This is an exciting development for India’s energy sector. By building more battery storage projects, India can improve the reliability of its electricity grid and move towards a cleaner energy future.
