On October 2, Reliance Group, led by Anil Ambani, announced a landmark partnership with the government of Bhutan to develop significant solar and hydropower projects. This collaboration represents the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) by a private company in Bhutan’s renewable energy sector, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing clean energy solutions in the region.
Reliance Group will work alongside Druk Holding and Investments Ltd, the commercial and investment arm of the Bhutanese government. Together, they will develop 500 megawatts (MW) of solar power and 770 MW of hydropower. This strategic investment marks a major boost to Bhutan’s renewable energy capabilities and positions the country as a key player in the green energy movement.
One of the major projects under this partnership is a 500 MW solar power plant to be built in Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan. The project will be executed in two phases of 250 MW each, and completion is expected within the next two years.
Once operational, this solar plant will become the largest solar installation in Bhutan, surpassing all existing solar facilities. The clean energy generated from this project will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting Bhutan’s environmental sustainability efforts.
Reliance Power Ltd, in collaboration with Druk Holding, will work together to develop the Chamkharchhu-1 Hydro Project. This project is a 770 MW run-of-the-river hydropower initiative aimed at generating clean energy.
The Chamkharchhu-1 Hydro Project will be developed under a concession model in line with Bhutan’s government policies on hydropower development. Once completed, the project will contribute to the country’s growing demand for sustainable energy and help reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
The partnership between Reliance Group and Druk Holding will go beyond energy generation. Both parties will explore new green technologies to further enhance Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity. The projects are also closely aligned with Bhutan’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions, demonstrating a shared commitment to addressing climate change.
As part of this partnership, Reliance Group has established a new flagship company, Reliance Enterprises. Jointly promoted by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Reliance Power, Reliance Enterprises will focus on investing in Bhutan’s renewable and green energy sector. The company will also play a key role in upgrading energy infrastructure across Bhutan by implementing smart distribution systems and advanced metering technologies.
The Reliance Group’s collaboration with the Bhutan government marks a significant step toward expanding renewable energy in the Himalayan region. With major solar and hydropower projects in the pipeline, this partnership is set to transform Bhutan’s energy landscape, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future. The projects not only strengthen ties between India and Bhutan but also reinforce both countries’ roles as leaders in the global green energy movement.
