From next month your PAN which is very important for many purposes, will become useless if it is not linked to your Aadhaar card. The Central government had extended the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar a number of times. The last date to link the documents is 31 March 2021, if the time limit is not extended once again by the government. The PAN cards which are not linked to Aadhaar would be useless and declared “inoperative” after the end of the deadline. From 1st April you will not be able to do any financial transaction,if your PAN is not already linked to your Aadhaar.

PAN is a mandatory proof

PAN card is mandatory for several purposes like opening a bank account, buying mutual funds or shares and even making cash transactions of over ₹50,000. There are many such transactions requiring a PAN card.

An inoperative PAN card will attract a penalty

Failure to link the PAN and Aadhaar card by the deadline will make your PAN inoperative. It will be assumed that your PAN has not been furnished as required by the law and a penalty of ₹10,000 may apply as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act.

How to link a PAN with your Aadhaar card: For linking the two documents,go to the income tax department’s e-filing portal.

  • Click on the Link Aadhaar section on the left.
  • You need to fill PAN number, Aadhaar number and name.
  • Fill in the CAPTCHA.
  • Click at the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option and your PAN Aadhaar Linking will get complete.
  • The I-T department will validate your name, date of birth and gender against Aadhaar details after which the linking will be done.

Link your PAN with Aadhaar through SMS: In case you are unable to link your PAN and Aadhaar using the e-filing website of the department, then link these two documents by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number. For this purposes, type UIDPAN and send it.

It should be in this format: UIDPAN (12-digit Aadhaar number) (10-digit PAN) and send it to 567678 or 56161.

Linking PAN with Aadhaar manually:

PAN and Aadhaar can be linked manually, to do so visit a service centre for PAN. Fill in a form ‘Annexure-I’ along with supporting documents – a copy of the PAN card and the Aadhaar card. Unlike online services, this service is not free of charge. You will be required to pay a prescribed fee to them.
